  • The House

Islay House has been welcoming guests since 1677. The house sits in 28 acres of gardens and ancient woodland above Loch Indaal — a historic country house that has been many things over the centuries and is now, at its simplest, somewhere worth coming back to. The rooms are individual and characterful. Breakfast is taken in the dining room each morning. The Peat Cutter Bar is open in the evening. The grounds are yours to explore. Everything else — the distilleries, the beaches, the wildlife, the golf — is within easy reach.

Breakfast

Breakfast at Islay House is served in the dining room each morning — a proper start to the day before heading out onto the island. The full Scottish is the thing to order: locally sourced where possible, unhurried, the kind of breakfast that makes a long day of distillery visits or walking feel entirely manageable. Continental options are also available for those who prefer a lighter start. Everything is made to order. There is no buffet, no rush, and no background music you did not ask for.

The Peat Cutter Bar

The Peat Cutter Bar is the natural end to a day on Islay. Wood-panelled, warm, and stocked with a considered selection of Islay single malts — all nine distilleries represented, chosen for character rather than familiarity. It is the kind of bar where the whisky does most of the talking. Whether you have spent the day visiting distilleries and want to compare notes over a dram, or simply want somewhere quiet to sit at the end of the evening, the Peat Cutter is there. Non-whisky drinkers are equally welcome.

The Grounds

Twenty-eight acres of gardens and ancient woodland, above Loch Indaal. The grounds at Islay House have been here as long as the house — mature trees, formal gardens, the woodland walks along the River Sorn, and the long views across the loch to the Rhinns peninsula. It is somewhere to walk in the morning before breakfast, or to sit in the evening when the light over the water is at its best. The grounds are open to guests throughout your stay. Dogs are welcome.
